Our story
The story of Las Caletas Lodge began over 30 years ago, when a chance meeting in Costa Rica sparked a lifelong mission. Drawn to the raw beauty of Drake Bay, the founders built a homestead on a pristine piece of land that would become a sanctuary for travelers from around the world.
Built by hand, powered by nature
1991
A single wooden hut
It started as a single wooden hut with a palm-frond roof, without running water or electricity: a rugged base for early adventurers and campers.
The first 15 years
Off the grid
For its first 15 years, Las Caletas ran entirely off the grid on solar and hydroelectric power.
Three decades
Growing slowly
Over three decades the property grew slowly and organically into the eco-conscious retreat it is today.
Today
Still making our own energy
Today we are connected to the regional grid, but we still produce our own energy, with the same independent spirit the lodge was founded on.
Protecting the Osa Peninsula
Sustainability is our family heritage
For more than 20 years we have run a strict recycling program and composted all organic waste to enrich the surrounding soil.
To protect the ecosystem and cut carbon emissions, the lodge has no air conditioning. Traditional architecture and ocean breezes keep the rooms comfortable while respecting the balance of the rainforest.
